Compare

Topsoil and Claude Code, compared fairly.

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool, and it can use Amazon Bedrock. Topsoil is a private AI coding agent built on Bedrock. Both keep a person in the loop; they differ in model choice, workflow and fleet controls.

The short version

Both can call Claude models on Amazon Bedrock. Claude Code is built around Anthropic’s Claude models. Topsoil uses any model your Bedrock account enables and can route each stage of a run to a different one.

Which one fits

Where Claude Code is a strong fit

  • You standardise on Claude models and want Anthropic’s own tooling for them.
  • You want a highly configurable agent with permission modes, hooks and settings you tune yourself.

Where Topsoil is a strong fit

  • You want inference to stay in your own AWS account, on Amazon Bedrock, including AWS GovCloud (US).
  • You want no vendor-operated service, prompt store or telemetry in the request path.
  • You want a staged workflow (explore, design, plan, implement, verify, review, document) with a different Bedrock model per stage.
  • You want monthly user and account budgets checked before each model call, with an AWS budget action as a backstop.
  • Your backlog is GitHub Issues, or Jira Data Center with Bitbucket Data Center inside your own network.

The two are not mutually exclusive: teams sometimes run more than one tool for different work. Ask us about a pilot to compare on your own code.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Can Claude Code and Topsoil both use Amazon Bedrock?

Yes. Claude Code documents Amazon Bedrock as a provider for Claude models. Topsoil is built on Bedrock and uses any model your account enables.

Which should we choose?

If you standardise on Claude and want Anthropic's own tool, Claude Code is a natural choice. If you want model choice per stage, fleet budgets and a backlog-to-pull-request workflow in your own AWS account, look at Topsoil.

See it against your own codebase.

A pilot runs in your own AWS account, with your models and your material, and ends with findings you can act on.
